Super Bowl LVIII: 49ers vs Chiefs — local fans weigh in

SUPER Bowl LVIII is set for Monday morning, local time, with the San Francisco 49ers (12-5) going up against the Kansas City Chiefs (11-6).

Who do you think will win?

Ed Manibusan, Marianas Surf Skate League president

“I’m rooting for the Chiefs because they’re a great underdog story this year compared to the stacked 49ers roster. The Chiefs had an average year for their standards but really turned it on to close out their season and in the playoffs they took down the Ravens who were the Super Bowl favorites. As an Eagles fan it’s tough to choose the Chiefs.”

Don Teregeyo, basketball player

“If you look at the Niners statistically they have a better offensive team, better running back, better receiver, and a young quarterback trying to make a name for himself. Maholmes really has nothing to prove; he already has a Super Bowl ring. This is the Niners’ third try at making it past the conference finals and now they are at the biggest stage. Purdy, Aiyuk, McCaffrey and my boy Deebo gonna’ bring it home for San Fran.”

Edward Dela Cruz Jr., Run Saipan president

“I would like for the 49ers to win. I am not a band wagon. Rooting for them because the 1998 Denver Broncos Super Bowl winning team has their sons in the 49ers line up this year. Wide receiver Edward McCaffrey and Head Coach Mike Shanahan’s sons are on this year’s 49ers team. I have faith in Brock Purdy overcoming Kansas City defense. But if I were putting money into this it would be Kansas City. Faith can only take you so far.”

Cameron Nicholas, golfer

“I am rooting for the 49ers because I wholeheartedly hate the Chiefs.”

Christian DeVero, basketball player

“49ers. They are the favorite right now and haven’t won a Super Bowl since 1995 so I bet they hype. Also I live in California and my man Tyreek Hill is not playing for the Chiefs anymore.”

Jylon Sablan, NMI Jr. National Baseball player

“The Chiefs because there’s so many 49ers fans on island, but my favorite NFL team is the Denver Broncos.”

Koji Taisacan, Marianas Rugby Club board member

“I despise that the Packers got eliminated by the Niners 😑😑but I think I despise the Chiefs more. So, I’m gonna be rooting for the 49ers this year. Hopefully the Niners can humble the Chiefs this year, and not have a repeat of the 2020 season.”

Ellery Cruz, motocross rider

“Growing up in the late ‘90s I was watching the Cowboys take on the Giants and it was a nice game. The one that took interest was the 49ers against the Packers — wildcard and that was a brutal game. It was Steve Young and Jerry Rice that got my attention. After Steve Young retired, I followed Jerry Rice and stuck with him on the Raiders — Go Raiders! For this Super Bowl I’ll hang my black and silver up to support the first team that got me hooked, the Red and Gold, let’s go 49ers!!!”

Santi Sablan, Power 99 alum radio personality a.k.a. “BigBoy”

“The 49ers! Since I was 6 during Joe Montana and Dwight Clark days, win or lose I’ve always been a loyal fan to the Niners-Dodgers-Lakers. It’s going to be a great game with the two best teams representing their conference. A lot of pro-bowlers and 1st team all pros playing on both sides — wouldn’t have it any other way. I really hope they win as Brock Purdy has been getting so much from the haters as he is humble and has that underdog feeling since high school so yeah, go 9ers! And much respect to the Chiefs. Great organization as well. Prediction: God willing, 37-17, 49ers of course.”
