ON Saturday morning, MMA fighter Frank “The Crank” Camacho, in line with the Fit To Lead initiative and in coordination with the Northern Marianas Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence, conducted a self-defense fitness class at the Trench Tech gym.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month so the class shared some self-defense and fitness techniques for men, women and children, Camacho said.
“We wanted to show that fitness is not only done in the gym but could be done with martial arts,” he added. The class also showed how to “protect yourself in a time when you need to defend yourself.”
Camacho added, “That’s why I wanted to do this class. I’m an MMA fighter from Saipan. I’ve been training for 16-17 years and I feel like I’ll been doing a disservice to the community if I never shared what I’ve been able to learn.”
During the class, participants learned how to keep balance, how to throw a jab and a “1-2” while protecting themselves on their feet or on the ground.
Camacho said they had so much fun that the one-hour event turned into two hours of workout and fitness.
About 40 individuals attended the class.
“I just want to continue to urge them to take ownership of their health and wellness,” Camacho said. “Spend some time every day to do their best to exercise, run with the family or walk on the beach…. Drink more water and eat healthier.”
Through the Fit To Lead initiative of the Office of the Governor, “we’re able to touch a lot of lives during these outreaches in a super fun and different way,” Camacho said.
He would like to thank the Fit To Lead team, the governor’s office, and the Domestic Violence Awareness Month Committee. “And thank you to the participants because a lot of them never really had done martial arts or anything physical in the past. I thank them so much for trusting me. We had a blast.”
