Christmas 2010 may be the most depressing in CNMI history because of the bad economy, but students have invented new ways to have fun during the holidays.
Some said they understand that the times are tough and spending time with family and friends should be enough to celebrate the birth of Christ.
Some are angry at the government while admitting that they can’t do anything about it, which also leaves them feeling helpless.
“Our parents have a very hard time paying the bills and putting food on the table because of all the paycuts. This isn’t a very merry Christmas but my siblings and I are trying to make it the best for our parents who work hard for us to survive. Having parents like them is a blessing,” said a 10th grade student from Marianas High School who declined to be identified.
MHS celebrated the holidays with an hour of performances and games.
The students of Hopwood Junior High School were “hyper” with the spirit of Christmas — and candy, of course. They celebrated the holidays with dancing, raffle drawing, and a basketball game.
School principal Jonas Barcinas wished his students a safe and merry Christmas.
Kagman High School celebrated Christmas with a performance by each class level and the JROTC Fancy Drill team.
“This is the closing of another decade,” said KagHS principal Alfred Ada to the students. “From year 2000 to the year 2010, we are witnessing history in the making.”
His students said they enjoyed the day.
“It’s just really fun to be with friends — especially during assembly. Many people may say that this Christmas doesn’t feel like Christmas but you just have to enjoy it with the people you care about,” said 10th grade Jaime Weita.
