Regents’ top priorities: Accreditation, funding, selection of new president

“Our immediate priorities also include obtaining the necessa ry financial resources for the college, and selecting the next NMC president,” Younis said.

She said the board will be “working extremely hard to continue to raise standards” and to transform the college into the premier institution of higher learning in the region.

Younis was elected chairwoman during the continuation of the regents’ regular meeting on Friday.

Elaine Hocog-Orilla was elected vice chairwoman while Frank Rabauliman will remain the treasurer.

The term of the former chairwoman, Janet H. King, expired on Sept. 23. She was not re-appointed by the governor.

“I am excited about the opportunity to work with my colleagues on the board and the entire NMC community to ensure that the college emerges from the current accreditation situation stronger and better positioned to meet the educational needs of students,” Younis said.

NMC interim President Lorraine T. Cabrera said Younis’s extensive experience in education and management “has been and continues to be a great asset for the college.

“I am also pleased that Regent Hocog-Orilla has agreed to serve as vice chairwoman given the wisdom and experience she has gained from serving as a member of the board for many years,” Cabrera said.

She said  under the leadership of Younis and Hocog-Orilla, she has no doubt that the significant progress that the college has made will continue.

“With Regents Younis’s and Orilla’s leadership, the college will continue to focus on ensuring NMC’s accreditation is reaffirmed while improving student learning and expanding educational opportunities for the people of the CNMI,” she said.

Younis expressed her appreciation to King for her service and commitment to the college and to the board.
