Park Ranger Nancy Kelchner said participants will have fun making and designing pirate hats, pirate swords and other items.
“The children will be given pirate names and eye patches to add to the excitement,” she said.
Kelchner said movies that will be shown at the Visitor Center are “Peter Pan,” “The Princess Bride” and “Hook” starting at 11 a.m.
“We will be giving talks about physical challenges, what it takes to be a pirate, and other pirate-related topics,” Kelchner said.
To cap the event, there will be a scavenger hunt at the park.
The observance of the International Talk Like a Pirate Day was started by friends John Baur and Mark Summers in Oregon in 1996 who designated Sept. 19 each year as the day when everybody should talk like a pirate.
“We are inviting everybody to come and join the International Talk like a Pirate event, because there will be loads of fun for all of you,” Kelchner said.
In related news, from 8:30 this morning until 1 p.m., students from Saipan Community School will be at the park to participate in various activities and develop problem solving skills.
