He said he will support any effort that taps alternative energy sources for Saipan.
Flores attended the three-day Pacific Islands Energy Symposium conducted by Northern Marianas College and the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy at the Hyatt Regency Saipan.
The government, he said, should find ways to bring energy costs down because the price of oil will continue to increase.
“When you have a bad economy and everything keeps on dropping but the electric bill is unaffordable then what’s going to happen?” he asked.
He said he understands the frustration of community members paying high power rates.
The Commonwealth Utilities Corp. should maintain a power rate that is “more affordable” to power consumers, he said. He didn’t say how CUC can do this.
The symposium was attended by government officials from the CNMI and other Pacific islands.
The event aimed to inform the people about the need to “develop a holistic approach” in addressing the islands’ energy issues.
