Over 6,000 workers needed for military buildup

He was one of the presenters in yesterday’s Military Contracting Business Forum at the Tinian Dynasty Hotel & Casino. Lynch discussed opportunities for businesses during the military buildup.

He said currently, there are 4,000 construction workers on Guam consisting of about 2,500 local and about 1,500 from other countries, mostly from the Philippines.

Lynch said the CNMI can help provide the needed additional workers.

“We need double the workforce which includes drivers, stevedores, technicians, and construction workers and the CNMI can take advantage to provide for this need. There are many opportunities and challenges that the CNMI can take advantage of,” he said.

Trade opportunities in the next few years on Guam and the CNMI will also increase, he added.

“These are exciting years because a lot is in store for  businesses,” he said.

Lynch discussed the Department of Defense’s ongoing and future construction projects on Guam through 2015.

These include massive access road repairs and improvements which will get a funding of  $50 million a year for the next four or five years; the Air Force Guam Strike, which has a funding of $150 million a year; wharf improvements with a funding of $360 million in fiscal year 2014; utilities with a $740 million total funding from  2012 to 2015; housing with approximately $2.5 billion funding; and a new hospital with a funding of $158 million

Lynch said NAVFAC Marianas establishes relationships with a group of pre-qualified contracting teams for multiple award construction contracts.

“Businesses should be able to avail of the many opportunities by getting in touch with us and checking our website for updates,” he said.
