It is estimated that approximately 40 judges and justices from the region as well as the CNMI private bar will be in attendance.
Chief Justice Miguel S. Demapan and the CNMI judiciary will be their host.
The event will commence Sunday evening with a welcome reception hosted by the CNMI Bar Association at the Fiesta Hotel.
The Manta Ray Band from Marianas High School will perform during the festivities.
Monday morning it will be down to four days of work and education with presentations and interactive discussions on subjects such as the handling pro se or self-represented litigation, ethics, the professional responsibilities of attorneys, and the courts as cultural mediators in domestic violence.
Presenters will include Richard Zorza Esq., a national figure on the topic of self-represented litigants, speaking on “The Challenges of Engagement and Neutrality for Judges and Courts,” Michael Keasler, a judge on the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals and a former faculty of the National Judicial College, whose address is entitled “Judicial Ethics,” and Robert J. Torres, chief justice, Guam Supreme Court whose speech “Can We Have Competent, Ethical, Courteous Lawyers in Court?” will be open to the attendance by members of the CNMI Bar Association.
Other prominent speakers from the region will be presenting.
Tuesday afternoon’s conference sessions and all those on Wednesday are open to CNMI Bar Association members for a $50 daily registration.
The conference participants include justices and judges from the Superior and Supreme Courts of Guam, the U.S. District Court of Guam, the Yap State Court, the Palauan Supreme and Land Courts, the High and District Courts of American Samoa, Chuuk’s State Supreme Court, the FSM Supreme Court, the Kosrae State Court, the High and District Courts of the Republic of the Marshall Islands and the Pohnpei Supreme Court.
Each of the island’s judiciaries will have an opportunity to tell of their own administrative team’s development, a focus of a meeting in Palau earlier this year.
One evening the attendees will be hosted for a group dinner by the chief justice and his wife.
