Police rescue man from drowning in Saipan lagoon

The responding police officers said they did not know the name of the person, where he lived and who was taking care of him.

They said residents often call DPS to complain about the same man who usually loiters around the island.

Yesterday, at 11 a.m., DPS boating safety was alerted by a 911 call from Rodolfo who said he was eating lunch in his car at the beach when he saw the vagabond looking for food at a nearby garbage can.

Rodolfo, who declined to disclose his surname, said he got out of his car to share his food, but he saw that the vagabond was already walking into the waters away from the shore.

When the vagabond was already in the deep part of the lagoon, he dove in and disappeared.

Rodolfo then called 911 and police responded within 10 minutes.

The officers said they saw that the vagabond was clinging at the buoy before trying to swim further.

The officers immediately boarded a rescue motorboat and headed to where the vagabond was. He refused to be assisted and decided to swim back to shore.

The boat followed him for almost 30 minutes before he successfully reached the shore.
