House scheduled to discuss austerity measure today

Speaker Froilan C. Tenorio, Covenant-Saipan, called off the session originally scheduled for Tuesday.

The Senate, for its part, is scheduled to hold a session this Friday on Rota.

The House Ways and Means Committee  held a series of meetings last week about budget issues amid projections that the cash-strapped CNMI government’s revenue resources for Fiscal Year 2011 would drop from $150.5 million to $137 million.

Rep. Ramon S. Basa, Covenant-Saipan, chairs the committee which is expected to submit its report on House Bill 17-22 also known as the Austerity Holidays and Unpaid Legal Holidays Act of 2010.

The bill had been drafted several times.

The original bill seeks to reduce government employees’ biweekly payroll to 64 hours from 80 through the implementation of a forced shutdown of public offices every Friday and by not paying certain legal holidays.

But committee members finally reached an agreement to reduce the payroll by just 10 percent or to 72 hours per payroll.
