5 students top GTC Science Fair

Five students with their projects were selected at GTC on Wednesday to represent the school in the STEM Fair.

The top five students were selected from all school entries based on a 12 criterion rubric judged by local archaeologists  Marilyn Swift and Randy Harper.

They are Patrick Agustin, 6th grade; Angela Aninon, 6th grade; Ha’ane Eugenio, 5th grade; Miguel Aninon, 4th grade; and Kelsey Conlon, 2nd grade.

GTC teachers Tawny Barcinas and Patricia Deleon Guerrero coordinated the school-level Science Fair event.

Certified clinical hemodialysis technician exam review course

(NMC) — Northern Marianas College, through the Division of Community Programs and Services’ Community Development Institute  and the CNMI Area Health Education Center, is offering a short-term training course to prepare hospital or clinical staff to take the dialysis certification examination.

The certified clinical hemodialysis technician exam review course will give students an opportunity to improve on their test-taking skills so that they may be more comfortable and confident in taking the exam. Students will review the principles of dialysis, procedures involved in hemodialysis and the basic skills needed in the health field. Content areas that students will be focusing on include technical, environment, and role.

The course will be held on March 14, 21, 28; April 4, 11, 18, 25; May 2, 9 and 16, from 8:30 am to 12:30 noon in Room C-4, at the As Terlaje campus.

SSHS PTA meeting

(SSHS) —  Parents/legal guardians of Saipan Southern High School students are urged to attend the PTA meeting on March 17, Wednesday, starting at 6 p.m. in the Manta Café.

Marianas March Against Cancer luminary, tickets on sale

(CCA) — Marianas March Against Cancer teams are rallying support for the annual event and are selling luminaries and raffle tickets.

“Whether it’s a parent, sibling, friend or neighbor, we all know someone who has been touched by cancer.  The Marianas March Against Cancer is one way of recognizing loved ones who are surviving cancer and remembering those who have lost the battle,” said Janine Nogis, 2010 MMAC chair.

Each luminary cost $5 and will be lighted at 7 p.m. at the Hopwood field on May 14, 2010. 

Raffle tickets are also on sale for $5 each.  Prizes include a roundtrip ticket to the U.S., roundtrip ticket to Asia, and travel vouchers, donated by Delta Airlines.

NMC Alumni Association unveils card program

(NMC) — Northern Marianas College unveiled its new alumni card program during the Alumni Mixer event held on March 11 at the Pacific Islands Club.  The alumni card program allows cardholders to take advantage of benefits and discounts offered by participating business establishments.

The Alumni Mixer was the first of many planned opportunities for alumni to register with the association and become aware of how they can participate in alumni sanctioned events that would have them give back to both the island community and the college.

Military to conduct training

(EMO) — The U.S. military will conduct military training on the following places, dates and time:

Farallon De Mendenilla

• March 15-19 – 7:45 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.

• March 16-18 – 1:30 p.m. to 4:15 p.m.

South of Guam

• March 17 – 9:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

• March 18 – 6:30 a.m. to 9:15 p.m., 9:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

• March 20 – 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Due to the danger imposed by this activity, Gov. Benigno R. Fitial is advising the general public, especially fishermen, commercial pilots and marine tour operators, to stay away from this area during the time and dates indicated.

Red flag at 4 Saipan sites

(DEQ) — The Division of Environmental Quality says water samples collected from Tanapag Meeting Hall, Central Repair Shop, DPW Channel Bridge and Hafa-Adai drainage contained excessive concentrations of fecal indicator bacteria that exceeded the CNMI’s marine water quality standards.

DEQ has given these locations a red flag and advises the public not to fish or swim within 300 feet of these locations for the next 48 hours or until otherwise notified.
