Court designates attorney for defendant in $200M mail fraud case

Designated Judge David Wiseman appointed attorney Timothy Bellas for Robinson, 43, a Washington, D.C. resident.

Appearing in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service on Monday, Robinson told the court that he did not want an attorney appointed for him.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Kirk Schuler represented the government.

Robinson said he planned to represent himself.

The indictment stated that on Dec. 19, 2008, Robinson made and possessed a counterfeit and forged document, namely a secured funding and offset bond, purportedly registered with the U.S. Department of Treasury which declared its value to be $200 million.

The offset bond was then paid to the order of Oceania Insurance Corp., a company registered and doing business in the CNMI.
