Fiji Times’ fate unclear under new media decree

Bainimarama’s administration has held consultations on a new media decree, which could be implemented within a month.

There are concerns that the decree will place further restrictions on what can be reported.

The News Limited owned Fiji Times has previously angered the Fijian administration and editors have been thrown out of the country.

It’s now facing the possibility of shutting down because the new decree will require media organizations to be owned by Fijians.

Speaking on New Zealand’s Radio Taurana, Bainimarama has refused to speculate on the Times’ future.

“That is a question for the Fiji Times to answer. The Fiji Times has to ask itself how it is contributing the to Fiji’s overall development,” he said.

“The government is keen to attract investors into the country. The government has an over-riding responsibility to ensure that the nation’s overall interest in placed ahead of editorial interests,” he added.
