Chamber of commerce scholarship application available online

Each year, the chamber awards thousands of dollars in scholarships to deserving local high school students to assist in defraying the ever-increasing cost of postsecondary education.

Funds for the scholarship are raised through the silent auction at the chamber’s annual installation dinner, through the annual Corporate Challenge, and through other events during the year.

This year, the chamber has increased the individual scholarship awards from $1,500 to $2,000 each.

The chamber anticipates awarding five such scholarships.  Both public and private high school seniors are eligible, as are non-U.S. citizens.

Application requirements include:

• Enrollment as a senior in a secondary school on Saipan.

• Proof of acceptance at a college, university, or vocational school of your choice.

• An official transcript demonstrating a grade point average of 3.5 or higher at the time of application.

• Completion of either the SAT or ACT college entrance exams and submission of your scores.

• Submission of letters of recommendation from two people; one should be from a business employer or an educator.

• A personal interview with the chamber’s education committee.

• Submission of an essay of no more than 1,000 words on the topic: “How I will Use My Education to Improve the CNMI.”

Applications are due at the chamber office by 5 p.m., Friday, April 30, and scholarships will be awarded at the chamber’s general membership meeting on June 2.

Questions may be directed to the chamber at [email protected] or 233-7150.
