NMC’s College Access Challenge Project: Going the extra mile

College Access Challenge Project staff and student employees, known as Ambassadors, commute to the island’s three public high schools at least twice a week to meet with juniors and seniors. At the high schools, ambassadors tutor students, proofread writing assignments, and even provide advice on entering and succeeding in college.

“We want to ensure that CACP participants are able to avail of all the services we offer, especially by meeting with them at their schools,” said CACP counselor Zenaida Javier. “We do our very best to be flexible and schedule around the availability of the students.”

Since it was first established back in Nov. 2008, CACP has been providing extensive tutoring and counseling services to high school juniors and seniors and first-year college students in the CNMI. Student participants can also schedule to meet with ambassadors and officials at NMC’s As Terlaje campus.

Aside from tutoring and counseling services, CACP has also been instrumental in coordinating and facilitating many outreach activities hosted by the college. These include the Cash for College workshops and the Start Smart Seminars that were held on Saipan, Rota, and Tinian. The Cash for College workshops in June and November of 2009 each attracted well over 300 students.

“CACP has played a tremendous role in NMC’s efforts to ensure that students are fully aware of the services and financial aid available to them as they pursue higher education,” said NMC interim President Lorraine T. Cabrera.
