Masters remember Micronesian Games silver medalists

And when they wear that jersey and hold the ball again as the league starts, they can’t help but take a glimpse of the past when the “treasure” of NMI basketball elites stood proudly as they watched the raising of CNMI flag with dignity and honor.

That was 16 years ago, but looking back, the scene is still vivid in the memory of Ray Lizama the board chairman of the Masters Basketball Federation of Northern Marianas Islands.

For him, the launching of Masters Basketball is the best time to remember the historical moments in NMI basketball specially that most if not all players today, “don’t even know who these silver medalists were in the 1994 Micronesian Games.”

“This prompts me to introduce this historical moments that is long been forgotten, never been heard of these elite players, who stand tall among the greatest players of the Pacific Island Regions,” Lizama said.

The members of the 1994 Men’s National Basketball Team are head coach Frank “Sonny” Flores, Assistant coach Michael White, players, Robert Quitugua, John R. Santos, Winsor Peter, Edsel Mendoza, Tony D. Diaz, Yosh S. Gabaldon, Swingly Agoun, Ed D. Diaz, Jess Dela Cruz, Joel Untalan, Steve Coleman, Wayne Perry, and team captain, Lizama.

Lizama also noted that as the 2010 Micronesian Games is fast approaching some sport organizations in the NMI are preparing their teams.

He wants to send a special recognition to these NMI teams participating in the 2010 Micronesian Games that will be held in Palau.

Lizama also encourages all participants “to stand tall, do your very best and bring home the Beacon.”

“I know the sacrifice, commitment, loyalty, the time away from your families is priceless as you all prepare for these events,” Lizama said.

As the “ambassadors of the CNMI, all team members’ role, he said reflects “our images and reputations in this level of competitions.”

“I challenge each athlete to strive and excel to your potential.  As you set goals to achieve, you have to bear in mind that success comes with dignity, hard work and which in turn speaks volume.  As, we come together as elite athletes of Micronesia to display one’s great talents, fundamental skills, with one common goal: pride, respect, friendship, cultural exchange, and unity,” he added.

The expectations and pressure in this competition Lizama said is overwhelming, as there are a lot at stake in Micronesian Games.

Like how he felt 16 years ago, Lizama said “we are proud to say that we were once who stand proud with the CNMI flag rising above us and earned the respect from the rest of our neighboring islands.

“Lastly, I want take this opportunity to extend my profound and gratitude to my mentor, friend, and future “CNMI Hall of Fame” coach Frank “Sonny” Flores, who instilled in me skills necessary to compete at the highest level against basketball elites, in local, international, and collegiate level,”
