Proa takes lead in GBL finals series

Despite a late-game push, FGC Construction’s efforts went down the drain after falling to Proa, 106-90 in overtime on Wednesday night.

Dan Barcinas snagged a game high 32 points and led Proa’s offense with seven points in OT while Pete Iguel and Jack Lizama scored 27 and 23, respectively. Teammate Marvin Rabauliman garnered 13 points before fouling out.

It was Iguel who forced both sides to an extra five minutes after tying the game, 85-85 on an undefended layup.

Less than a minute remained when FGC drew a two-point lead on Lerio Pagarao’s field goal. The team had earlier caught a nine-point lead and slipped on a shaky second quarter performance, allowing Iguel 16 points.

Iguel single-handedly narrowed the scores to 40-43 while Barcinas and Lizama poured in nine points before halftime.

Proa followed on a 5-2 run and tied the game, 45-45 after Lizama’s triple in the third period’s opening minutes.

Barcinas scored a jumper between Lerio Pagarao and Kae Bernardo and Rabauliman connected a layup to gain the upper hand.

A wave of frustration hit FGC as they trailed Proa, 58-51 6:20 in the third quarter.

Bernardo then fired three right-handed shots to launch FGC on a 6-14 run.

Proa — still ahead 74-73 — was once again threatened for the lead, with Iguel scoring only four points in the second half.

Lizama got away with a shot below the basket and blasted his first triple before joining Barcinas and Rabauliman in OT.

Team FGC lost their spark in the extra five minutes and mustered only five points from Bernardo’s field goal and Pagarao’s free throws.

Barcinas and Lizama eked out back-to-back baskets with the former hitting a three-pointer seconds before the buzzer.

Proa is now one game away from clinching the GBL title.

FGC must win tonight to reach game three on Monday.

Peter Mendiola and Gino Libuw aided Proa with four points apiece. Josh Sablan added three.
