Tinian library concludes first Kukunitus program

Kukunitus is  Chamorro for the world’s favorite insect: the colorful spotted ladybug.

Lorna Cruz of the Tinian Public Library said the 13th Tinian Municipal Council represented by its staff and council member Joseph Cruz presented gifts to the students.

Lorna Cruz said the pilot program had a great turnout and reached its maximum capacity. Classes were held from Monday to Thursday, 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., during the summer.

The Kukunitus program was designed to prepare the children to enter school with improved levels of foundational skills in language, reading and mathematics. It also provided experiences that encourage the children to acquire new skills. Six- and 7-year-olds, moreover, learned basic computer skills.

Lorna Cruz said the Tinian Public Library will analyze its data after the program to determine the design of the next youth development program.

She said on behalf of the Tinian Public Library, they are extending their sincere appreciation to the Tinian Mayor’s office, Jasmeen Borja, Marveluz, the parents of the participants, volunteers Balbina M. Perez and Florine M. Hofschneider, certified early childhood teacher Maria Castro, the library staff, Workforce Investment Agency participants, Congressman Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan, Bank of Guam, Huang Shun Store, and the Post Office.
