Japan flag flies in Marpi

This was made possible by the visit of Hiroshima Rotary Club members Koji Yamaoka and Shunji Meguro.

While here last week, the two went to the Marianas Visitors Authority  and Saipan mayor’s office, according to Vinycia Seman, the mayor’s special administrative assistant.

She said the Japanese Rotarians wanted to see their country’s flag at  the peace memorial in Marpi.

“It would be very appropriate to have a Japan flag raised during special ceremonies honoring the Japanese who died here during the war,” she said.

Seman said the Japanese flag at the memorial shows Japan’s “attachment” to the CNMI, which used to be administered by Japan.

Yamaoka made the CNMI his destination of choice, she added.

Although Saipan Mayor Donald G. Flores was not present to meet with the visitors, they visited his  office, Seman said.

“They extended their utmost appreciation to everyone,” she added.

At the mayor’s office, Seman said Yamaoka and Meguro presented two Japanese flags that the office can use whenever a Japanese flag is needed.

“Yamaoka and Meguro extended their gratitude and are looking forward to their next visit,” she added.
