Joeten-Kiyu library offers 3 computer workshops

Joeten-Kiyu Public Library Information Technology Center coordinator Roy Diaz Rechebei said the workshops are underwritten by JKPL and the Institute of Museum and Library Services through the Library and State Technology Act’s 5-year grant.

The workshops include Office Suite Applications and will be in addition to the regular computer classes held for free every Saturday.

Rechebei said  because of the reduced work hours under the current austerity measures, each workshop will be conducted for three weeks or nine days — from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesdays, and from 2 to 4 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays.

The first workshop will run from June 29 to July 15. The second workshop will start on July 20 and end on August 5, while the third workshop will run from August 10 to 26.

Workshop 1 will cover Office Suite Applications: Purpose and Proper Use which will allow participants to get a better grasp of the uses of the specific programs being used.

Rechebei said this workshop covers Word Processing, Spreadsheet or Excel and Presentation or PowerPoint. The workshop will detail the programs in three- day sessions each.

Workshop 2 will cover Integrating Files Within the Suite Applications and will teach the students how the files between programs interact, and the manner in which the files are used.

Workshop 2 will discuss  some of the function key commands for efficient operations, and identify certain key problems most users face when moving files or combining specific parts of a file to another part.

Workshop 3 will cover File Management & Alternatives of Software which will teach the students how and where to save files.

Rechebei said although this may sound basic, participants will learn methods that will make filing and saving effective, organized, and retrievable.

Workshop 3 will introduce different modes of practices in the office environment, and will also include alternative software and the trends which the CNMI should consider in the next technology generation.

Rechebei said anyone with a library card can participate. Registration starts on June 10 and closes on June 17.

He said only 12 computer slots are available per workshop plus eight slots for those who want to bring their own laptops with Microsoft Office or OpenOffice.Org applications. Each workshop session costs $30 for each individual.

Participants must have at least some knowledge in basic computing, and some keyboarding and mouse skills. The workshop is targeted for offices/companies, professionals, schools, community groups and higher learning students.
