The students who received $1,000 award will enroll in Northern Marianas College.
The recipients from Marianas High School were Severino Pascual Alforeza who wants to major in natural resources management or nursing; Goldie Acera Aque, natural resources management/environmentalist; and Alvijane Joy Flores Manabat, accounting.
Recipients from Kagman High School were Merdeces Manglona Mesa, criminal justice/sociology; and Jason Ray Rosirie Palacios, business management/tourism and hospitality.
Lynette L. Villagomez, Public School System program coordinator for the Territorial and Freely Associated States Educational Grant, extended her gratitude to Saipan World Resort.
“This comes at a very difficult point in time in the CNMI, considering the economic situation we are facing. We are grateful to know that 63 percent of our students have committed to go to college to further their education, and scholarships like this can go a long way. We are proud of our students for taking the advantage and opportunity to apply for this scholarship,” Villagomez said.
She thanked Saipan World Resort “for your vision of support to create this community of partnership and helping us educate students who can make this a better place to live in.”
Saipan World Resort president and general manager Myung Wook Park said it is the hotel’s first time to award scholarships but they plan to make it a tradition.
“We hope next year we will have more recipients,” Park added.
NMC dean of student services Leo Pangelinan accepted the scholarship checks for the students.
To qualify for the scholarships a student must be a resident of the CNMI for at least 36 consecutive months, accepted at NMC for academic year 2011-2012, and has a cumulative high school GPA of 3.0 or higher.
The five students were chosen after a careful review and scoring by the selection committee.
