Women In Action founder and the wife of the Rota mayor, Estrella Mendiola, told the Variety that since the group was founded in February last year, their membership continues to grow even as they get involved in various projects on island.
Mendiola said gone are the days when women just stand on the sidelines.
“We are very happy with the participation we got from our members in the recently held sweet potato festival, and we are hoping for their continued participation in forthcoming programs and events,” Mendiola said.
Women In Action will be spearheading a ballroom dance contest for the San Francisco fiesta in Songsong this October.
“Following the success of our first ballroom dancing contest last year, we will be holding another one this year,” Mendiola said.
Since the group’s launching last year, the growing list of its activities included sponsoring Chamorro essay competitions in schools, dance contests for kindergarten to grade 12, hosting special occasions such as Mother’s Day, distributing gifts for the manamko’ and the children on Christmas, visiting sick people at the hospital, painting the concrete flower planter along the Sinapalo highway and participating in the San Isidro fiesta.
Mendiola said only half of their over 40 members are active but she hopes the rest will soon join their activities.
“We have more programs coming up for the community, and we plan to be here for a long time,” Mendiola said.
