During a session yesterday, Torres, Ind.-Saipan and a supporter of the Friends of Marpi’s cause, urged his colleagues to consider the idea of painting the Marpi poles green in case both parties remain deadlocked on the issue.
Noting the clamor against the installation of power poles in the historic area, which is also one of the island’s major tourist spots, Torres said the issue on Marpi preservation must be addressed.
He noted, however, that the administration is not budging and wants to see the completion of the controversial project.
He said to protect the natural beauty of Marpi, the government might as well paint the poles green to match the color of the surrounding tangan-tangan and other vegetation. “The poles should blend with nature,” he added.
Perhaps there are ornamental plants that can “stick to the pole and crawl all the way up and around it,” he said.
Such plants should cover the poles, he said.
Torres, in an interview, said he will suggest these proposals to the agency overseeing the project and the Friends of Marpi.
