THE waves at Obyan Beach are set to splash with talented bodyboarding action as the Marianas Surf Skate League’s annual Boogie Down at Obyan 2025 competition returns this Saturday.

Marking the third year of this celebrated event, the 2025 installment is making history with the addition of a much-anticipated Women’s Open Division. The introduction of the Women’s Open Division is the biggest news for this year’s competition — an initiative designed to provide a formal platform for the islands’ most skilled female bodyboarders. This move not only broadens the contest’s scope but also inspires the next generation of women riders in the CNMI.

“Yes! We’ve added a Women’s Open Division,” MSSL Chair Ed Manibusan said. “So now we can recognize the CNMI’s best female bodyboarder.”

The new division joins the established categories, including the Men’s Open and the highly technical Drop-Knee Division.

Expectations are high for a spectacular show, with Manibusan confirming the return of past champions and a strong roster of highly talented surfers ready to compete. “Yes, we have our previous champions competing again this year, as well as other talented surfers,” Manibusan said. The competitive atmosphere — combined with the introduction of the new division — is expected to draw a deep pool of skill, promising intense heats and jaw-dropping maneuvers on Obyan’s challenging waves.

A community-driven success story

As the Marianas Surf Skate League continues to host this annual event, MSSL emphasized the essential role of the local community and sponsors.

“We are so grateful for the entire CNMI community’s support, and especially our surfers and sponsors,” Manibusan said. “We can’t make these events successful without the community’s support.”

The spirit of the event is deeply rooted in island style: a day filled with surfing competition, community, music, food, and good vibes — all centered around the beautiful backdrop of Obyan Beach.

Valued sponsors include Marpac, Kona Brewing, Allied Pacific Environmental Consulting, Boarderline, The Athlete’s Foot Saipan, All Star Sporting Goods, Atkins Kroll, MacAir, Galuti Club, Johnny’s Bar & Grill, Beyer Woodworking, Saipan Surf Co., SOIS, Mariana Arts, Caravan of Food, Local Bones, Salty Skin Pacific, and Roil Soil.
