(SIS) — Saipan International School proudly announces the appointment of Ian Song, a senior and president of the Student Council, to the prestigious United States Military Academy at West Point as a member of the Class of 2029. Ian’s achievement reflects his dedication, leadership, and academic excellence, cultivated through his extensive involvement at SIS and the many opportunities provided by the school.

During his time at SIS, Ian distinguished himself as an exemplary leader and a well-rounded student. In addition to serving as President of the Student Council, Ian was an active participant in Speech and Debate and Model United Nations, where he honed his public speaking, critical thinking, and diplomacy skills. A dedicated four-season athlete, Ian competed in cross-country, volleyball, basketball, and track and field, showcasing his commitment to teamwork, discipline, and perseverance.

Kim Church, Ian’s English and AP Capstone teacher, expressed her admiration for his journey, stating:

“Ian has the unique ability to both be a leader but also contribute fully when he is placed in a followship role. He fits both of the roles the military needs, inspired leadership and dedicated followership. He is an accomplished thespian, athlete, mathematician and more. He represents himself, his family, the school and the community with dignity, humility and intelligence. Ian is just luminescent and I believe that he has a great path in front of him.”

Dr. Ron Snyder, headmaster of Saipan International School, emphasized the broader impact of Ian’s achievement. “Ian’s appointment to West Point is a proud moment for SIS and the CNMI community. His success reflects not only his personal excellence but also the quality of education and mentorship SIS provides. Ian’s leadership in Student Council, his achievements in athletics, and his participation in academic programs like Speech and Debate and Model UN are shining examples of what SIS students can achieve.” Dr. Ron mentioned that SIS has seen several Air Force Academy appointments but that Ian was the first SIS Gecko to be accepted directly from SIS into West Point. “We couldn’t be more overjoyed,” he concluded.

SIS counselor Angela Taflinger continued, “Ian’s passion for learning, his unwavering commitment to his goals, and his remarkable ability to inspire others have always set him apart. Watching him grow as a scholar, leader, and athlete has been a privilege. His appointment to West Point is a testament to his character and relentless hard work. We are incredibly proud of him.”

Ian credits much of his success to the unique opportunities at SIS, which allowed him to excel in academics, leadership, and extracurricular pursuits. As the first AP Capstone school in the CNMI, SIS enabled Ian to engage in advanced research and develop critical thinking skills essential for higher education and beyond. The school’s emphasis on leadership and community involvement also played a pivotal role in shaping Ian’s character and preparing him for the challenges of West Point. Last summer, Ian was selected for the CNMI team at the national Speech and Debate competition but was also selected for the Summer Leaders Experience at West Point and this helped cement his decision to apply to West Point firmly in place.

The Summer Leaders Experience  at the United States Military Academy at West Point is a highly selective program designed for high school juniors considering applying to West Point. It provides participants with an immersive, week-long introduction to cadet life and the academy’s rigorous academic, physical, and military training.

Key aspects of the program include:

1) Leadership Development. Activities designed to foster leadership skills and teamwork.

2) Academic Exposure. Classes in science, engineering, humanities, and more, taught by West Point faculty.

3) Physical and Military Training. Challenging physical activities and basic military training experiences.

4) Campus Life. Insights into the daily schedule and traditions of West Point cadets.

Ian’s appointment to West Point is a significant milestone for Saipan International School and the broader CNMI community. His achievement serves as an inspiration to future generations of students, encouraging them to aim high and make meaningful contributions to their communities and the world.
