FEWER people are coming to the Liberation Day festivities at American Memorial Park because there are no stalls for gambling activities, according to the Saipan Mayor’s Office.
But Saipan Mayor Juan B. Tudela yesterday said more people would visit the park when rides and game booths are fully operational.
Tudela brushed aside claims that the festivities are “boring.” He said most people prefer the “family oriented” theme at the park.
In a meeting with Mayor’s Office personnel the other day, one staff said “there are not much people because there is no gambling.”
“I can understand those people,” Tudela said.
However, he added, not all booths have been bought and the rides still have to be checked to ensure safety.
This year’s Liberation Day Committee decided not to allow gambling upon the advice of the Attorney General’s Office. Gambling is illegal on Saipan.
Gambling booths had helped the committee generate more revenues and attracted more people at the park in the past. However, the Mayor’s Office was also brought to court over the legality of the gambling activities.
In related news, Tudela said the U.S. Marines Pacific Band has agreed to perform on the 4th of July Liberation Parade. The band will arrive here on July 2.
The Air Force Band had also been invited but its officials said they could not make it due to prior commitments.
