Fiji soldiers proud to be peacekeepers

SUVA (Pacnews) — Fiji’s participation in past and current foreign military campaigns was commemorated by the nation’s military.

Events at the army barracks included extensive artillery, weaponry displays and mock battles by the soldiers.

The Fiji military has completed two foreign missions in the past—serving alongside American soldiers in the Solomon Islands during World War II and with British soldiers in Malaysia from 1952 to 1956.

This campaign was to defend British rubber plantations from communist rebels in Malaysia, while the earlier and first foreign mission was to halt the Japanese advancement in the Pacific during World War II.

Fiji military’s participation under the United Nations Forces in Lebanon banner that began in 1978 will end in Dec. 2002, without renewal by the U.N.
