Environment awareness campaign launched

PAPE’ETE (Pacnews) — The French Polynesia government has launched a major environment awareness campaign last week.

Speaking at the launching of the program, Tahiti’s Tourism, Environment and Women’s Minister Nicole Bouteau said the three-year campaign will be aimed at raising awareness of “the fundamental environment stakes for future generations and the development of our economy’s key sectors, such as tourism and fisheries.”

She said the multimedia campaign with the theme “Environment is Every Polynesian’s Business” would cost CPF18 million ($135,000).

“Every Polynesian has the right to live in an environment that provides health and well-being, as opposed to permanent risks of depletion our natural spaces face. It was therefore legitimate that the government elaborates a program aiming at reducing those menaces that are likely to weaken our environment, our ecosystem and our biodiversity,” Bouteau said.
