GOVERNOR Juan N. Babauta and two of the major sponsors of the encouraged residents and visitors from neighboring islands to help the recovery of the CNMI’s economy by spending more.
Babauta, in his welcoming remarks during the opening ceremony, said while the CNMI economy is getting better, increased consumer spending will further help the recovery.
“Dig deep into your pockets, buy more, because the economy needs it,” Babauta said.
The governor added, “Spend money to buy crafts and arts from participants from (the CNMI), Palau, Yap, the Marshalls, Guam—the more we spend, the better the economy can get.”
Cecile Bamba-Terlaje, Mobil Oil Mariana Islands’ manager for public and government relations, and DFS Galleria Saipan President Marian Aldan-Pierce echoed Babauta’s call.
“I encourage them to dig deep into their pockets and support the different community events here in the CNMI. I’m sure (we’re all willing) to help the economy get better,” Terlaje said.
This has been Mobil’s eighth major sponsorship of the annual festival.
Reigning Miss CNMI Universe Virginia Gridley and Lino Olopai served as the masters of ceremony for the opening event.
The governor and Community and Cultural Affairs Secretary Juan L. Babauta presented plaques of appreciation to the representatives of the visiting delegations from the neighboring islands, as well as to the canoe voyagers who traveled from Satawal to Saipan.
