EPA launches environmental awards program

THE CNMI has joined the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in launching the fourth annual search for nominees to the Environmental Awards Program.

The program seeks to recognize individuals and groups that went beyond the call of duty to improve the environment in 2001.

In a statement issued last week, EPA encouraged citizens in the CNMI, Guam, American Samoa, California, Nevada, Hawaii and Arizona to nominate a friend, peer or organization for this year’s awards program.

“Anyone can be nominated, such as scientists, teachers, journalists, citizen activists, young people, organizations, business representatives, public officials and others committed to preserving our natural surroundings,” EPA said.

Entries will be judged on the following criteria: promotion of innovative ideas, techniques and/or technologies; ability to address an environmental problem or need; accomplishment of goals; and ability of the program/activity to be replicated or widely shared.

Other criteria include collaboration with others; clarity and effectiveness of the presentation; and long-term benefits for the environment.

EPA said the nomination forms must be filled out and returned to EPA’s Region IX office no later than April 26.

An EPA panel will review the applications and select this year’s finalists by mid-May.

Winners will then be recognized at a ceremony in June.
