KOROR (Palau Horizon) — Two public school teachers received $5,000 each and a trip to Washington, D.C. after being selected by the Ministry of Education as recipients of this year’s Christa McAuliffe Fellowship Program.
This year’s fellows are Arnedia Kyarii Obeketang of Koror Elementary School and Sandy Mengloi of George B. Harris Elementary School.
They were selected for their proposed projects that aim to assist the development and implementation of education improvement initiatives.
The program was created in 1987 in memory of McAuliffe, the New Hampshire teacher who was one of the astronauts that died when the space shuttle Challenger burst into flames after taking off in 1986.
Mengloi’s proposed project would develop reference materials focusing on indigenous and endangered plants and animals in Palau.
Obeketang’s proposed project aims to enhance and promote the students’ artistic creativity through the inclusion of traditional arts and crafts, including music, in the curriculum.
The $5,000 received by the two teachers will fund their projects and the trip to Washington, D.C. where they will attend the annual Christa McAuliffe Fellowship conference.
