HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — A man is facing a handful of charges related to a high-speed chase on Christmas Eve leading from Dededo to Tamuning.
Aljy Freda Jain was charged in the Superior Court of Guam with eluding a police officer, resisting arrest, reckless driving, expired vehicle registration and operating a vehicle without a license.
According to the magistrate’s complaint, Jain, 21, was arrested after officers with the Guam Police Department attempted to pull him over about 1 a.m. on Christmas Eve.
Jain allegedly was driving a red Nissan Versa with no front license plate at a four-way intersection in Dededo when a police officer activated his emergency lights and sirens in an attempt to pull over the Versa.
Documents state Jain pulled over for about 20 seconds on the shoulder of the road before speeding off.
“Officers pursued the vehicle, as the driver disobeyed several stop signs, causing vehicles to come to an abrupt stop. The Versa continued accelerating at a high rate of speed on Lada Avenue in a neighborhood area. As the vehicle approached Route 28, it made a left turn onto the shoulder portion of Route 28 in the oncoming lane, which nearly collided with a vehicle traveling eastbound,” the complaint stated.
Jain subsequently went back onto Route 28 and continued speeding before driving onto the oncoming lane to pass a car by La Familia Mart.
“Officers were at three car lengths away when it was observed that the officers’ rate of speed was 90 miles per hour. However, the Versa continued to gain distance. The Versa continued to exceed the speed limit, disregard(ed) a red traffic light and swerve(d) in and out of lanes, constantly applying his brakes, causing other drivers to come to abrupt stops to avoid colliding with the Versa,” the complaint stated.
The high-speed chase eventually ended at Tun Pedro Cruz Street in Tamuning after several other police vehicles joined the pursuit.
Jain allegedly got out of the car and was running on foot when officers caught up to him. As he was being arrested, Jain refused to follow instructions to put his hands behind his back by “stiffening his arms and pulling away,” according to the complaint.
Police then learned the Versa’s registration and insurance were expired.
Jain faces about two years in prison if convicted of the charges, according to the Office of the Attorney General. He was committed to the Department of Corrections on $1,000 cash bail.
Jain was charged earlier this month with misdemeanor assault, according to court documents.
A Guam Police Department cruiser is seen Dec. 6, 2023, parked in front of the Dededo Precinct.
