THE Department of Public Lands will be hosting an award ceremony today, Wednesday, for its inaugural scholarship essay contest for post-secondary students of Northern Marianas descent.
At 2 p.m. today in the DPL conference room on the second floor of the Joeten Dandan building, five grand prize winners and three additional prize winners of the contest will receive their awards.
In all, there were 51 applicants, said DPL special assistant to the secretary Deveney Dela Cruz.
The scholarship winners, along with the public land lessees who sponsored the awards, will be present for the ceremony.
Applicants were required to answer the essay question, “Why is it important to preserve public lands in the CNMI?”
The essay had to be between 500 and 800 words, written in either Microsoft Word or PDF format, and submitted no later than November 23 at 10 p.m. Chamorro Standard Time.
Prizes amount to $1,250 for first place; $1,000 for second place; $1,000 for third place; $1,000 for fourth place; and $600 for fifth place.
The sponsors of the contest are Triple Star International Corporation, Bibong Corporation LLC, Saipan Stevedore, and Kenneth and Concepcion Coward.
Contestants must be enrolled full-time in a US-accredited institution, pursuing an undergraduate degree, vocational trade certificate, graduate or post-graduate program in the spring or fall 2021 term.
They must also be enrolled in a minimum of 12 credits for undergraduate students or a minimum of 3 credits for graduate or post-graduate students.
Contestants do not need to be on-island to win.
