THE NMI’s La Hunn, Nasson Wessel and Anne Lee earned separate wins Tuesday at the 2023 Pacific Oceania Junior Championships in Lautoka, Fiji.
La Hunn remains undefeated with two wins in group C of the Boys Singles 14.
On Monday, Hunn’s skills were unmatched as he eased past Fiji’s Frank Sun, 6-0, 6-0. Although his second match against Solomon Islands’ John Kennedy Taufunu proved to be tougher, Hunn bagged a two-set victory, 6-2, 6-1, on Tuesday.
Nasson Wessel was in second place in group B of the Boys Singles 14 with two points after his victory against the FSM’s Dontrick Daniel in a three-set match.
In the opening set, Wessel was in control as he triumphed over Daniel, 6-1. However, in the second set, Daniel held onto the lead and eventually bagged the win, 6-4, to force a third and final set.
Wessel stood tall in the extended bout and finished strong, 10-7, to earn his first win in the tournament and collect two points.
Wessel lost his first game against Tahiti’s Nicholas Montaigut, 2-6, 6-4, 8-10.
Anne Lee shares a similar record as she recovered from her initial loss by defeating the Solomon Islands’ Maelyn Bird in group C of the Girls Singles 14 event.
The first set saw both sides exchanging returns and going into overtime before Lee emerged victorious, 7-6(3).
Bird tried to stay in the fight in the second set but failed to keep up with Lee who triumphed, 6-3, to clinch her first win of the tournament.
On Monday, however, Lee fell to Samoa’s Dora Moors in a three-set battle, 6-3, 3-6, 2-10.
Another NMI player, June Yu defeated Samoa’s Titus Paul, 6-2, 6-2, but lost to Vanuatu’s Fintan Molbaleh, 2-6, 1-6 in group C of the Boys Singles 16.
For their part, the team NMI Girls beat the Tahiti Girls, 2-1, in group B of the U12 Girls event while the NMI Boys defeated the Cook Islands Boys, 2-1, in group B of the U12 Boys event.
