THE deadline for the Bureau of Environmental and Coastal Quality’s recycled boat race has been extended to June.
The competition was supposed to take place Saturday but Division of Environmental Quality Director Zabrina Cruz said they are extending the deadline to give more students an opportunity to join.
“The activity has been moved to June as part of the CNMI Oceans Month celebration,” she said.
They are inviting middle school students to participate in this year’s Recycled Boat — Reduce Reuse Race.
Individuals can register as a team or as a solo participant.
The boat should be able to accommodate a minimum of one person and a maximum of six people.
During the competition, all crew members are required to wear life vests or a floating device. Foot protection is also advisable.
No motors are allowed. The boats must be human-powered, but paddles are accepted whether they are store-bought or made from recycled products.
The course will be 100 meters — 50 meters each way.
The first team to cross the finish line will win first prize. The amount of the cash prizes for the top three boats as well as the date of the new deadline will be announced soon.
All boats must have a name and must be made of recycled materials except for duct tape, zip ties, rope and glue.
