Fire burns garment factory

Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Lei Ogumoro said a man reported the fire incident in Chalan Piao at 4:52 a.m.

Ogumoro said DPS immediately dispatched rescue units from Susupe.

Fire engine #1 from Koblerville also responded to the call and arrived in the area at about 4:59 a.m.

Ogumoro said units were dispatched to control the traffic as well as the crowd exiting from the building.

She said Commonwealth Ports Authority firefighters also arrived at the scene.

Based on information gathered from firefighers, Ogumoro said the building that sustained extensive damage was used for sewing and cutting.

She said the fire traveled toward the barracks complex from the sewing and cutting area.

“The firefighters were able to contain the fire at 3:30 p.m.,” she said.

Ogumoro added that the firefighters had to deal with hazardous materials, textiles and chemicals.

She said based on the facts they gathered, the building was also home to 239 employees of the garment factory.

“No one was hurt and all employees were accounted for. They were able to exit from the building safely,” she added.

“As of this time, the cause of the fire is still under investigation,” Ogumoro said. She added that acting fire crew supervisor Dan Suel and Acting deputy fire director Capt. Tom Manglona are conducting the incident investigation.

Ogumoro said about 20 to 30 mutual aide personnel and other agencies also offered assistance. The fire victims sought temporary shelter at the UIC garment factory in San Antonio.

Ogumoro said the firefighters from the DPS and CPA were assisted by detectives and personnel from the patrol and traffic divisions, the Red Cross, the Emergency Management Office, the Department of Public Works and the Division of Environmental Quality.
