Sablan reports for work, to meet with feds

She was seen being briefed and welcomed by the Board of Education in the conference room at the PSS central office on Capital Hill after she was introduced to the other personnel.

Today, two visiting officials from the U.S. Department of Education are scheduled to meet with Sablan and the BOE members.

According to PSS federal programs officer Tim Thornburgh, the USDOE team will inquire about the latest student achievements, the compliance with the highly qualified teachers requirement, the progress on the electronic data system and the technical assistance that the federal government may extend to CNMI schools.

“And most importantly, they want to meet the new commissioner,” Thornburgh said.

The visitors, he added, are expected to fly to Guam in the afternoon for a four-week visit and review of the island’s school system.

Sablan is scheduled to meet with school administrators and principals on Thursday.

She worked for PSS for over 20 years before retiring and assuming the commissioner’s post.
