Northwest Airbus reports inflight emergency, lands safely

The Northwest Airbus 330 had 180 passengers and 11 crewmembers.

Commonwealth Port Authority acting Executive Director Ike Perez said “faulty hydraulic” was the main cause of the plane’s problem.

Perez said CPA personnel, including its Airport Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting unit, responded to the emergency call 11 minutes after the airplane landed at 2:20 p.m.

“The plane landed safety and there was no injury onboard,” Perez told Variety.

POI Aviation, Northwest’s ground and handling service provider, also helped tow the stuck aircraft on the runway, Perez said.

At 2:55 p.m., after an inspection of the runway was conducted, it was re-opened for operation, he added.

The departure of three Freedom Air flights to Tinian were delayed because of the incident. The arrival of a Cape Air flight from Guam was also delayed.

A pilot, who declined to be identified, said hydraulic failure “is very critical in an aircraft” as it will affect the landing gear from coming out and the flaps from operating.

Variety tried but failed to get a comment from the Northwest management.
