He helps the Bangladeshi Cultural Group organize the annual celebration of their people’s successful fight for freedom from Pakistan.
More than 100 people attended the celebration this year, he said.
Other Saipan residents also joined the Bangladeshi community during its celebration at the Garapan Central Park.
Bangladeshi Cultural Group president Rakibul Islam Pinto said they are glad to see Bangladeshis on Saipan gather in celebrating Victory Day.
“We have invited all and it seems most of us came,” Pinto said.
Syed said the Victory Day celebration was successful.
The event, he added, also allowed Bangladeshis to talk about the issues affecting them.
“It’s good to get together once in a while so that we can maintain our lines of communication which is very important for people of the same origin when they are in a foreign place like this,” Syed said.
Bangladeshis started migrating to Saipan during the construction boom in the late 1980s. Most of them also landed jobs in the security business.
Eventually, the pioneering Bangladesh workers on Saipan started the taxi business on island.
Syed said majority of Saipan taxi operators are Bangladeshis.
Syed is the president of Saipan City Taxi which serves tourists on island.
A significant number of Bangladeshis are also married to locals and Freely Associates citizens and now have close to 100 U.S. citizen children, he said.
