House panel to meet with NMC officials

Committee Chairman Ralph DLG. Torres said they will look into the complaints against  NMC President Carmen Fernandez’s leadership.

“The committee has been willing, and continues to, offer its assistance and support to NMC.  It is imperative that we have complete transparency and accountability of our only post-secondary institution in the Northern Marianas,” Torres said in his letter to Fernandez.

Torres, R-Saipan, said the committee also wants an update on NMC’s show cause status with the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

Torres said they want to know NMC’s plans regarding the commission’s recommendations,  the status of the college’s budget, which includes the cost of operations, salaries and the amount of federal assistance provided to the students and the college.

He said the committee asked Fernandez to brief lawmakers again about the degrees and courses offered by NMC, including the number of students who graduate each year from the college, and a brief summary of the programs and services for student recruitment and retention.
