According to Ngarchelong State Assemblyman, Ngirablau Sambal, the state’s governor, Browny Salvador, had asked Denicio Mariur to explore possibilities through which the youth of Ngarchelong would willingly and actively participate in youth activities to commemorate March 15; and at the same time, entice the youth to unite and be more proactive about developments and activities of the state.
“The governor believes that it is the initiative of the people of the state that makes a difference,” Sambal said in a phone interview. “I agree with him and have pledge my support to assist in the planning of the youth activities.”Sambal further added that Mariur and other adults – including him – have taken a role of facilitators and advisors of the youth meetings dedicated to the planning of the activities.“We merely make suggestions and the youth decide on what they want to do to celebrate their day,” Sambal said. “We simply guide the process.”According to Sambal, the Ngarchelong youth had earlier declined an Aimeliik State invitation to participate in youth fundraising activities at Aimeliik State during the weekend of March 15. Further, the Ngarchelong youth were more inclined to contribute and part take in activities held at Ngarchelong rather than elsewhere.“During prior meetings with the youth,” Sambal said, “a majority had indicated that previous youth activities had often been held outside of Ngarchelong and much of it had been competitive events that did not allow for full participation of many of Ngarchelong youth.”Moreover, the fact that previous youth sport activities were competitive in nature and organized youth state games, many of Ngarchelong played for other states other than Ngarchelong.Sambal had indicated that the youth clearly wanted to celebrate March 15 as indigenous Ngarchelong youth; and they wanted to celebrate the day with their parents and citizens of their state.Sambal said that the Ngarchelong youth have elected celebrate Palau’s Youth Day at Oketol Dock, Ngarchelong.He said that the youth had decided to create activities that would utilize the new facilities at Oketol Dock; and that the activities would engage not only youth but all citizens and residents of the state.“The youth adamant about putting on a big show for the people of Ngarchelong,” Sambal said. “And they have extended their invitations to their family members, relatives, and friends to not only support their plans for youth day, but also to take part in the activities.”Sambal said, “ It is only appropriate that our youth christen Oketol Dock in celebration of their day.”Furthermore, Sambal said, the governor and the adult proponents of the Ngarchelong youth plans and activities, and the youth of Ngarchelong are soliciting for support from the people of the state.
