CUC water rationing will continue

CUC water division manager Mario Iglecias said they implemented  water rationing on Capital Hill and in Garapan.

This will continue until further notice, he added.

Water rationing is implemented in lower As Teo from 5 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

On Capital Hill, Wireless Hill and Talofofo, water service is available from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. everyday.

In I-Denni area, water service is from 5 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

In south Garapan, water is available from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. every day; while in western Garapan, there will be water from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. everyday.

Iglecias said  CUC has to implement water rationing because supply continues to be depleted due to the moderate drought condition affecting the island.

“The people are a little bit irate but they also understand the situation,” he added.

Iglecias said other areas are getting their water from other sources.

Other water wells are experiencing extremely high salinity levels while overall aquifer levels are falling due to the drought, he said.

The low supply of water will also affect its quality, he added.

During the dry season, the water source will be depleted and seawater will likely intrude into the water wells.

The Donni Spring has already been shut down.

Another spring in Achugao has also dried up.

Only the Tanapag spring is supplying water to CUC, Iglecias said.

The average water consumption on Saipan reaches one million gallon everyday.
