Dela Cruz has been accepted to the People to People Leadership Summit at the Harvard University in Boston, Massachusetts, June 28-July 4.
All students accepted into the program must meet rigorous academic and leadership requirements.
Dela Cruz was nominated and accepted for the honor based on outstanding scholastic merit, civic involvement and leadership potential.
The People to People Leadership Summits bring together outstanding student leaders from around the globe to focus on leadership, team building, community service, college admissions, and professional aspirations.
Students work on an action plan to make a difference in their communities, develop skills to help them lead tomorrow’s world, and build their college resumes, while earning academic or service-learning credit.
Participants also gain insights to guide their educational and professional careers, and benefit from a strong focus on college admissions.
Through workshops, presentations, excursions and discussions, student leaders attain a clear advantage as they pursue and fine-tune their selected fields of interest.
Students will have the opportunity to meet with admissions officers and gain valuable advice for navigating the college application process.

Homework assistance program
(JKPL) — If you are a fifth to 12th grade student and would like some expert help and advice with your homework or study, you should take advantage of the homework assistance program offered by the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library and funded through an Institute of Museum and Library Services competitive grant.
Students can get help with their homework from knowledgeable staff to strengthen their skills in academic areas.
This program also helps young people to view homework as an opportunity to learn to work independently, complete projects on time and feel positive about their accomplishments.
The after-school tutors might work with teachers to find out what the children are learning during the day and what homework assignments they have in order to provide tutoring to reinforce what is taught during the school day.
For more information, call 235-7322 or 235-7329.
Red flag at 9 sites
(DEQ) — The Division of Environmental Quality has raised the red flag at nine sites on Saipan and advises the public not to fish or swim within 300 feet of these locations for the next 48 hours or until otherwise notified.
Samples collected from CK district #2, CK district #4, Garapan Beach, Garapan Fishing Dock, Hafa Adai Hotel, American Memorial Park, Smiling Cove Marina, DPW Channel Bridge and Central Repair Shop on Saipan contained excessive concentrations of fecal indicator bacteria — enterococci — that exceeded the CNMI Marine Water Quality Standards.
These bacteria can indicate the presence of human and animal waste in the water.
However, studies have shown that storm water runoff in tropical environments may also contain these bacteria from the natural environment, which may not be directly associated with public health concerns.
Rota beaches are assigned a green flag.
The public is encouraged to contact DEQ at 664-8500 with any questions concerning this matter.
