Election commission needs $192K

The Legislature has already approved an appropriation totaling $172,000 for the commission.

Guerrero hopes the administration and the Legislature will provide the commission the amount they requested.

The money will be used to print the ballots, pay poll workers, buy election supplies, including ballot boxes, and sustain the commission’s operations until the election winners have been determined.

The commission will determine today how many poll workers will be needed to assist the close to 14,000 registered voters in the CNMI.

Guerrero said about 70 registered voters who are residents of Alamagan and Agrigan in the Northern Islands must also be served their ballots either via air or sea.

“They are also registered voters and they have the right to vote,” he said.

In related news, the House of Representatives passed on Monday a bill setting the rules for the conduct of the runoff election in case none of the gubernatorial candidates get the 50 percent plus 1 of the votes cast this general election.

Guerrero said a runoff “is very likely.”

House Bill 16-220  now goes to the governor.

“We need the guidelines,” Guerrero said.
