Senate confirms Sablan’s re-appointment to CPA board

Sablan’s term expired last June 28 and Gov. Benigno R. Fitial nominated him again to continue to represent Saipan on the CPA board for another four years.

The re-appointment required the confirmation of the Senate.

During the session yesterday, Sen. Paul  A. Manglona expressed concerns regarding CPA management’s comments about the operations of the airports on Rota and Tinian.

It appears to him, Manglona said, that CPA management is undermining the airports on the two islands.

Manglona, R-Rota, also brought up the matter about the new toll booth that will be charging people picking up and dropping off passengers at the airport.

The senator opposes this idea.

Sablan, a former House member, took note of all the concerns raised.

In an interview, Sablan said it is very important for him to be on the CPA board to help the ports function properly.

He also wants to focus on helping CPA pay its obligations.

Sablan said before he became board member, he knew that the sea port owed Bank of Guam $20 million and was paying on a monthly basis.

The airport, he said, owed a little over $20 million.

“So I want to make sure we pay regularly,” Sablan said adding that “if we fail to do that, Bank of Guam would probably run the airport and the seaport which we don’t want to see happening.”
