Arrested for extortion, assault with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery and disturbing the peace were Shan Guo Fu, He Bao Hua, Gu Ma Chao and Zhu Li Ju.
Associate Judge David A. Wiseman imposed a $25,000 cash bail each on Shan Guo Fu and He Bau Ha, and $5,000 cash bail each on Zhu Li Ju and Gu Ma Chao.
Wiseman imposed an additional $5,000 cash bail on Shan Guo Fu after he was charged with bribery for trying to pay Detective Christopher Leon Guerrero $1,000 yesterday for his release.
Assistant Attorney General Brian Gallagher represented the government during the bail hearing yesterday while Chief Public Defender Adam Hardwicke represented He Bau Hua.
Wiseman said he will assign lawyers to the three other defendants.
He set the preliminary hearing for July 7 and the arraignment for July 13.
In his affidavit, Leon Guerrero said at about 3:19 p.m. on April 22, 2008, a female caller reported to the Department of Public Safety a disturbance behind Beijing Store in San Antonio.
Police officers who responded to the scene learned that the victim, Nai Jun Song, was transported to the Commonwealth Health Center for injuries to his arms, chest and head.
The victim received seven stitches for his head wound.
He told police he was at his house when the four defendants arrived and threatened to take his house key, beat him up and throw his body off Suicide Cliff.
The victim said the defendants then dragged him outside his house and started beating him.
He said one of the defendants threw a rock at him and missed, but another struck his head with the rock.
The victim said the defendants beat and kicked him until he fell to the ground.
He said they got a hollow block and started hitting his head with it.
He said he eventually managed to get up and ran away to call the police.
Four witnesses supported the story of the victim.
According to the victim, he had paid the defendants $300 in “protection fee.”
He said on the day the defendants beat him, they were asking $1,000.
