The students who got the scholarships are Swayze R. Chin, Danica Elechang, Uriik T. Luii, Jake Ngiraked, Villiah Ngirmekur, Anthony B. Rudimch, Ethan S. Tmodrang, Timothy G. Udui, Belbult J. Ulechong and Gail Williams.
The Board also awarded the Speaker Tadao Ngotel Scholarship, Bank of Hawaii Scholarship and Steven Bai Nakamura Memorial Scholarship to deserving students.Tadao Ngotel awarded the Speaker Tadao Ngotel scholarship to Brandon Shiro.Bank of Hawaii Vice President and Country Manager James Lowson III awarded the Bank of Hawaii scholarships to Geneva Ringang and Herson Herman.Joliz Nagata was selected as recipient of Steven Bail Nakamura Memorial Scholarship award.This is the first year of the Steven Bail Nakamura scholarship and was established by Nakamura’s widow, Miriam Uehara Nakamura.The Scholarship Board has completed reviewing the applications for school year 2008-2009.The Board said over 240 students applied but only 171 received some type of assistance from PNSB.Recipients are selected according to established program criteria such as minimum GPA required, number of credit completed in the previous academic year and completeness of application filed.Undergraduate students are given up to five years to complete their bachelor’s degree while graduate students are limited up three years to obtain their master’s or doctorate degree.Aside from the local scholarships that are available each year, the Board also facilitates with the applications of other country -sponsored scholarships from Japan, New Zealand, Australia and Taiwan.The donor country does final selections of the recipients of these scholarships.The Congressional Scholastic Award was created to recognize the top five Palauan students who excelled in academics during high school. This scholarship has evolved through the years and in 1996, the OEK increased the number from five to ten recipients each year.Recipient must maintain a GPA of at least 3.75 in all four years of high school and must have taken the SAT and TOEFL and must be accepted to an accredited college.Each recipient shall receive $5,000.Since school year 1991-1992, the Board has awarded scholarships to over 140 students.PNSB commends Olbiil Era Kelulau for their continued support for higher education as they continue to fund scholarships, grants and students loans for Palauans.The Board said any applicants who submitted an application and have not heard from the Scholarship Office could call 4883608 for inquiries.
