3 schools top McDonald’s Saipan fundraiser

MBA got first place for turning over a total of 3, 514 coupons for the fundraising event on two Saturdays — Sept. 19 and 26.

Green Meadow School placed second and received a $3,200 cash prize for earning 3,228 points. Mount Carmel School earned 1,482 points and received the third place prize of $1,000.

MBA principal Ramiro H. Trinidad said the student council under its president Richard Park took charge in distributing the coupons for the fundraising event.

Winning against the other schools that had more students was a big surprise for MBA.

“We were hesitant at first because we only have a population of 90 students and six teachers, but now we know success is not in how many you are but in how you all pool your efforts to work together,” Trinidad said.

He added that he is going to turn over the prize to the students for their efforts.

Trinidad said it will be up to the students to decide how they will spend the money.

“They may use it for a banquet or a trip to Managaha for their acquaintance party,” he said.

McDonald’s Saipan administration and marketing assistant Ana Olaes said they extended invitations to all the private school on island and seven participated in the fundraising drive from Sept. 19 to 26.

The other participating schools were Saipan Community School, which earned 1,182 points; Grace Christian Academy, 980; Agape School, 443; and Seventh-Day Adventist, 55.

Olaes said the SDA school would have liked to actively participate in the fundraiser but the events were held on Saturdays, their day of worship.

From Sept. 19 to 26, McDonald’s Saipan gave coupons to the private schools to distribute to the community.

The coupons were turned over to the McDonald’s counter on the two Saturdays for the customers to avail of the promotional items like the dollar menu and other discounted items.

The school with the most number of coupons returned to McDonald’s Saipan won.

McDonald’s Saipan owner/president Jose Ayuyu said because of the unexpectedly huge turnout of customers during the two Saturdays, they decided to give the winners more than the originally planned $3,000 and $2,000 cash prizes for the first and second placers.

School president Milagros A. Merjilla, principal Marilyn T. Divino and guidance counselor Eleonor A. Alejo received the second prize for Green Meadow School.

Margaret Dela Cruz received the prize for Mount Carmel School.

Aside from the cash prizes, McDonald’s also gave out $100 gift certificates to Mt. Carmel and $50 each to MBA and Green Meadow.
