Aquaculture is the answer to growing seafood demand

As course coordinator for marine fisheries and resources, Seman  accompanied 14 students in attending the summer class of  Northern Marianas College-Cooperative Research Extension and Education Service.

Seman described the aquaculture presentation and activities as “very educational.”

The presentation focused on fish biology, aquaponics, water quality testing and feeding.

NMC said the event was part of the 4th Annual Saipan High School Summer Course on Marine Fisheries and Resources at the NMC-CREES aquaculture facilities.

Among the students who attended the course were Jim Lacsina, Kodie Castro, Elloise Lotoc and Rachel Cabrera.

The students also toured the NMC-CREES aquaculture wet laboratories, witnessed a dissection of a tilapia and learned more about the daily tasks of aquaculture specialists.

Visiting summer course participant Jimin J. Cheon said “they explained very well the internal organs of the fish and gave me detailed instruction on  dissecting fish.”

NMC said the summer internship program was offered competitively to incoming high school juniors and seniors “in order to provide them an opportunity to develop an interest in various fields of agriculture and science.”

The program is funded through a grant from the Caribbean Pacific Consortium.
