Babauta: Human smuggling case validates security concerns

“One of the reasons why we extended federal immigration here in the Northern Marianas was in fact because of security issues,” said Babauta, who was on Saipan recently.

On Jan, 5, the U.S. Attorney’s Office charged 24 Chinese nationals — six females and 18 males — with human smuggling.

One of two ringleaders turned out to be Gov. Benigno R. Fitial’s masseuse.

Fitial filed a lawsuit in Washington, D.C. to challenge the federalization law, but it was dismissed.
